10 Days in June: Racing Road Trip Part 1 Ottawa

The slogan for these Ottawa twilight meets is “nobody does it better.” I’m not so sure about that. It was ok, but not really having a schedule isn’t helpful for the athletes. I suppose having a schedule and then being late is not great either. Kudos for the organizers for not running and hiding when the lighting was striking all around the track. Once the skies opened up, and the clouds got it out of their system, the wind calmed down and it was a perfect night for racing.

Anyway, this meet was adequate for our purposes, which were to get a little race effort in before going to Boston on Saturday. Dan Kramer (1:54.78) and Coralina Tse (2:20.30) ran 800m and both PBed. Ryan Noel-Hodge (8:45.47, last K in 2:50) and Brenna Walsh (10:41.03, last K in 3:29) had a “workout” 3k where they were to run the first 2k at their 5k pace, and then drop it down for the last k. Both succeeded in doing so. Paul Gallant , Kyle L’Esperance and Clifford Reid joined us to race 3k, mostly as a test to see where they were at. Kyle succumbed to his on-going knee issue, Paul ran well (9:46.03), and Cliff now knows where he is at after 12-hour landscaping work days (11:20.22)! I’ll post videos of the three races (all 3ks were run together) below. All results at the Ottawa Lions site. I’ll post a fun video in a couple weeks featuring all of our adventures in Ottawa, Boston and London, so stay tuned for that! Should be fun…

Here’s a full account of the trip, with a focus on cooking, bugs and a little bit of racing all rolled into one:
